High school professor Gollwitz loves the theater. But only secretly. Even his Roman tragedy Der Raub der Sabinerinnen (The Rape of the Sabine Women), written years ago, is only taken out of the drawer when the air is clean, that is, his wife Friederike is out of the house. When theatre director Emanuel Striese, who makes a guest appearance in the small town with his travelling stage, accidentally gets wind of the play, he senses a sold-out hall with its premiere, and supported by the theatre-loving maid Rosa and son-in-law Leopold, Professor Gollwitz agrees to the adventure. Now or never, because Mrs. Friederike is with the youngest daughter Paula on a spa trip on the Baltic Sea. Suddenly, however, the two return prematurely, and while trying to conceal the true identity of theater director Striese, the noose continues to tighten with every emergency lie. On the evening of the premiere, there is a bang! A comedy classic about the passion for theatre? with a real theatre director as theatre director!
