Young Ernesto and the penniless young widow Norina love each other. Between a marriage of the two, however, Ernesto's old, rich, stingy and unsympathetic uncle Don Pasquale is crowded, who vetoes and instead wants to put himself on free feet. Good advice is now expensive. Dr. Malatesta, both Ernesto's best friend and Don Pasquale's confidant, forges a plan to help the young lovers achieve marital happiness and the inheritance to which they are entitled. His supposed ? Sister? Sofrina ? in truth the disguised Norina ? Don Pasquale is acclaimed as a wife and can take her fate into her own hands with a lot of acting talent and the active support of Ernesto and Malatesta. In this classic opera buffa from 1843, tangible comedy and lifelike figures merge with Donizetti's compositional refinement and result in an entertaining symbiosis in which the audience is allowed to revel in musical bel canto dreams.
